Minority Service in Israel's Armed Forces: Background

Israel’s military is made up largely of conscripts, but conscription does not apply equally to all citizens. Most Arab citizens are not conscripted, and some choose to volunteer.

Druze men have been subject to conscription since 1956, following an agreement with community leaders, and members of the community serve in many roles. Bedouin citizens can volunteer, and some serve in specialized roles.

Questions about how to organize service by community, including whether to use separate units, are the subject of ongoing public debate in Israel.
