Franco-British Defense Cooperation: The 2010 Lancaster House Treaties

In November 2010, the United Kingdom and France signed two treaties at Lancaster House in London. One covered defense and security cooperation, and the other cooperation on nuclear weapons stewardship and testing facilities.

The agreements also envisaged a combined joint expeditionary force and closer work on equipment and logistics. They reflected shared budget pressures and both countries’ roles as nuclear powers and permanent members of the UN Security Council.

Cooperation has continued to develop, though each country retains sovereignty over its forces.
